Startups competing with Open.AI and ChatGPT4

AI is eating the world this time around. We see another hype (?), an inflow of startups building in AI. In San Francisco, you no longer ask, What do you do?’ but What AI meet-up do you go to?’. Next to an uncounted number of startups popping up on the market, there are also corporate initiatives showing off new advancements in AI. Below are a few examples of the companies quite well known on the market, as well as their founders because for me, it’s all about the people who are behind those companies, about the drive and motivation to bring it to the market, and not just about the technology itself.

Google’s BERT: BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers) is a pre-trained language model developed by Google. It is designed to understand the context and meaning of words in a sentence, making it useful for various natural language processing tasks.

Microsoft’s GPT-3: Microsoft has developed its own version of GPT-3, a language model that can generate human-like text. Microsoft’s version is still in the early stages of development, but it shows promise for various applications.

Facebook’s RoBERTa: RoBERTa (Robustly Optimized BERT Approach) is a language model developed by Facebook. It is similar to BERT in many ways but has been optimized for a wide range of natural language processing tasks.

Amazon’s Alexa: While not strictly a language model, Amazon’s Alexa is a popular voice assistant that uses natural language processing to understand user commands and respond appropriately. It competes with other voice assistants like Apple’s Siri and Google Assistant.

IBM Watson: IBM Watson is a suite of AI tools designed to help businesses make sense of large amounts of data. It includes natural language processing capabilities to help businesses analyze customer feedback and other unstructured data.

Hugging Face, founders Clément Delangue and Sylvain Gugger: it’s a startup company focused on developing and providing state-of-the-art natural language processing tools and models. They offer an open-source library called “Transformers” that provides a wide range of pre-trained language models for tasks such as text classification, question-answering, and language generation. In addition to the library, Hugging Face has also developed an AI-powered chatbot called “EleutherAI”(more details below) that can engage in natural language conversations with users. They have also created an online platform called “Hugging Face Spaces” that allows users to easily build and deploy their own chatbots using pre-trained models from the Transformers library. Furthermore, Hugging Face has partnered with various organizations to integrate their language models and tools into different applications. For example, they have collaborated with Microsoft to integrate their language models into Microsoft’s Power Platform, which is used for developing business applications. They have also partnered with Intel to optimize their models for deployment on Intel hardware.

EleutherAI (as mentioned above): it’s a community-driven research organization that is focused on developing open-source natural language processing (NLP) models and tools. The organization was founded in 2020 by a group of NLP researchers and enthusiasts who wanted to democratize access to state-of-the-art language models. The main project of EleutherAI is called “GPT-Neo”, which is an open-source implementation of the popular language model GPT-3 developed by OpenAI. GPT-Neo is trained on massive amounts of text data and can perform a wide range of NLP tasks, such as language generation, text completion, and question answering. However, unlike GPT-3, which is a proprietary model owned by OpenAI, GPT-Neo is open-source and freely available for anyone to use and modify. In addition to GPT-Neo, EleutherAI has also developed other open-source NLP tools and models, such as a language model called “GPT-Orthogonal” that is designed to be more interpretable and transparent than other language models. EleutherAI is focused on advancing the field of NLP through open collaboration and community-driven research. Their goal is to make cutting-edge NLP technology more accessible and transparent, and to encourage a more open and democratic approach to AI research and development.
